Nzinga Mbande, resisted Portuguese advancements into her homeland when she became Queen of Ndongo (modern day Angola) after her brother's death in 1626. At the peak of conflict, she made an alliance with the Dutch, an enemy of the Portuguese, and defeated the Portuguese army in 1647. She continued her resistance against enslavement of her people until her peaceful death in her 80s. She was never captured, despite relentless efforts to dethrone her throughout her reign.
